Choosing and Styling a Table Lamp for Your Space
A table lamp does more than illuminate a surface. Its shape, shade and placement can bring balance to a bedside table, console or reading corner. Start with proportion and function, then build the styling around it.
Measure the surface before you choose a position
Look at the usable space on the table, including the objects you keep there every day. A lamp needs a stable base with room around it. Check the shade’s widest point as well as the footprint of the base, and keep it clear of curtains and other materials according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Match the lamp to the activity
For a reading corner, place the lamp where its light reaches the page without shining directly into your eyes. At a bedside, consider the height of the mattress and your seated position. On a hallway console, the lamp can provide a welcoming glow while leaving space for keys and everyday essentials.
Use contrast thoughtfully
A rounded base can soften a straight-edged console. A textured shade can add interest to a smooth painted wall. Choose one or two elements that connect the lamp to the room, such as a repeated colour or a material used elsewhere. Every object does not need to match.
Give decorative objects room to breathe
Arrange a small group around the lamp rather than filling the whole table. A book, bowl or small vase can be enough. Vary the height of the objects, and leave an open area so the arrangement feels useful. Keep liquids away from electrical fittings.
Plan the cord and test the light
Check the socket location before committing to the layout. Route the cord where it will not be trapped, stretched or create a trip hazard. Once the lamp is in place, view it from the doorway and your normal seat. A small shift can improve the balance of the entire corner.
